Personal trainer in Montreal: kinesiologist, certified trainer and winter
In Montreal, choosing a personal trainer often means choosing between two profiles: the certified personal trainer and the kinesiologist, a specialist in physical activity. Neither currently belongs to a professional order in Quebec, and we found no Quebec law that reserves personal training to holders of a diploma, as France does with its professional card. That may change for kinesiologists. On 7 April 2026 the Government of Quebec launched work to regulate the profession, which numbers about 3,500 members, and according to the Fédération des kinésiologues du Québec, the Ordre des ergothérapeutes was named in June 2026 as the host order, with no final timetable yet. Meanwhile, certifications are the reference point. The most demanding Canadian one for personal trainers, the CSEP-CPT from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, requires at least the equivalent of two years of full-time post-secondary study in a related field. After that come method, and the Montreal winter, which makes an indoor plan essential for several months a year.

A rough guide. In Quebec, no professional order yet covers personal trainers or kinesiologists.
No professional order, for now
In Quebec, health professions are regulated through professional orders. Personal trainers have none, and kinesiologists do not have one yet. We found no rule comparable to the French professional card described in personal trainer in Paris, so the degree and the certification serve as proof.
Kinesiologists: regulation in preparation
On 7 April 2026 the Government of Quebec announced the launch of work to regulate kinesiologists, entrusted to the Office des professions du Québec. The announcement counts about 3,500 kinesiologists in the province. According to the Fédération des kinésiologues du Québec, the Office had issued a favourable opinion on 1 April 2026, and on 16 June 2026 the Ordre des ergothérapeutes du Québec was named host order. A transition committee is to set the terms; the timetable is still open.
Until the order exists, the title cannot be checked with it: ask for the university degree and, where relevant, membership of the Fédération.
Certified trainers: CSEP-CPT and others
The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology awards the CSEP-CPT. Its scope of practice requires at least the equivalent of two years of full-time study, or 60 credits, in a related field such as kinesiology, exercise science or health promotion. A certified trainer works with apparently healthy people or those with a stable health condition, and does not use assessments or programmes requiring maximal aerobic or anaerobic effort, nor maximal one-repetition strength tests, unless specialised.
Other certifications exist, Canadian or American: ask for the organisation and the expiry date.
Kinesiologist or trainer: a return from injury
Take Julie, 47, who lives in Rosemont and is getting over an ankle sprain. She wants to run on Mount Royal again in the spring. Her physiotherapist has finished the rehabilitation; strength and confidence still need rebuilding.
A CSEP-CPT trainer could suit her, since her condition is now stable. Julie chooses a kinesiologist instead, whose field of study is adapted physical activity, because she also has blood pressure monitored by her doctor. At the first meeting, the kinesiologist has her complete the PAR-Q+, a screening questionnaire developed in Canada, and tests her balance on the injured leg. The plan is written for twelve weeks: strength and balance indoors first, then brisk walking along the Lachine Canal, and finally the first running climbs on Mount Royal. At the end of the first month, the kinesiologist sends a short summary to Julie's physiotherapist.
If pain returns on effort, or in case of chest pain, fainting or abnormal breathlessness, stop and see your doctor before carrying on.
Winter, and places by season
- Mount Royal Park: climbs, stairs and trails, from summer into the snow for those who are equipped.
- Parc La Fontaine, on the Plateau, for neighbourhood sessions.
- The Lachine Canal, a long flat path for walking fast, running or cycling.
- Parc Jean-Drapeau, on the islands.
- At home, in a gym or online when freezing rain makes the pavements dangerous.
From December to March, when the mountain paths are icy, Julie meets her kinesiologist in her building's gym. The hotel room workout shows that a living room is enough for a full session.
Six questions to ask in Montreal
- Kinesiologist or certified trainer: which degree or certification, and may I see it?
- Is your certification still valid?
- Does my health situation fall within your scope of practice?
- What do we do on storm days?
- Which tests do you run at the start?
- Will you work with my doctor or physiotherapist if needed?
Montreal is bilingual in practice, so choose a trainer who coaches comfortably in your language. After 40, strength becomes the priority: see strength after 40. The other criteria are in choosing a personal trainer.
Storm weeks with Never Skip Club
When snow shuts everything down, the session happens in the living room. Never Skip Club builds it in a minute from the body area, the level (Easy, Medium or Intense), 20, 30 or 45 minutes and the place, with five or six animated exercises and your sets logged. Julie started a crew with three friends from the neighbourhood, three sessions a week for a month: the ranking rewards those who keep the rhythm, not those who do more.
For a supervised session, book a coach from our network, at home, at the office or in a gym, changeable up to 24 hours before, with a report in the app. If there is no coach available in Montreal yet, send your request anyway: the network is growing. If you often travel south, read personal trainer in New York. Create your free account, find a coach, or sign in.
Questions
Are kinesiologists in Quebec part of a professional order yet?
Not yet. On 7 April 2026 the Government of Quebec launched work to regulate the profession, which numbers about 3,500 members. According to the Fédération des kinésiologues du Québec, the Ordre des ergothérapeutes was named in June 2026 as host order, and a transition committee is to set the terms. No final timetable had been fixed when we checked.
What does a CSEP-CPT certification tell me about a Montreal trainer?
According to the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, it requires at least the equivalent of two years of full-time post-secondary study in a related field such as kinesiology. Certified trainers work with apparently healthy people or those with a stable health condition, and do not use maximal-effort tests or programmes unless they hold a specialisation that allows it.
Should I hire a kinesiologist or a personal trainer in Montreal?
It depends on your situation. For general fitness without health problems, a well-trained certified trainer is suitable. With a stable chronic condition, recurring pain or a return after injury, a kinesiologist, whose field of study is adapted physical activity, is often the better fit. In both cases, ask for proof of training.
How do I keep training with a coach through a Montreal winter?
Settle the winter arrangement in the autumn: sessions at home, a gym the trainer can use, or video calls. On days of storms or freezing rain, a bodyweight session in a living room replaces the park session. Keeping the same day and time every week matters more for progress than where the session takes place.
